BRONG AHAFO REGION

One of the regions of Ghana that is located near the center of the country is the Brong Ahafo Region.

This region has two different climatic zones, which includes the north section which is in the savanna and then the southern section which is a part of the rain belt of Ghana.

You'll find that the people that are located here are Akans and most of them are farmers. Some of the crops that are raised in this region include yams, cocoa, maize, fruits, and cassava.

Since it rains just about 9 months out of the year in the rain belt, the soil is great and provides excellent cash crops. So, this region is often known as Ghana's "Bread Basket."

The capital of this region in the country of Ghana is Sunyani. This is a beautiful city that is not near as crowded as Kumasi and Accra. Life is a bit slower and idyllic here.

You'll find that this city is only about 1.5 hours from the city of Kumasi, so it is easy to get too if you want to visit. Another of the main towns in the region is Techiman. This town is about 60 km away from Sunyani and tradition believes that this is where the Akans were born.

On days when the market is held, which is on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, this town comes to life and it is an interesting and busy scene to behold.

If you are interested in visiting some of the tourist attractions in the area, you won't want to miss the Kintampo Waterfalls. These waterfalls are extremely beautiful and the water comes down from the falls, goes underground, and then about 200 meters away you'll find that the water resurfaces again.

This is truly a beautiful sight to behold. Another great place to visit is the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary. You'll find Colobus monkeys and Mono monkeys in the area that are beautiful and humorous.

They are sacred and it is taboo to kill any monkey, not to mention that they are protected. You can enter this sanctuary for free, but if you plan on taking pictures, then you'll have to pay a small fee.

You'll also want to visit the Kwaku Fri shrine, which is only going to be open on Sunday and Wednesday. The Hani Archaeological Site is another excellent place to visit where you can see various tools from the Stone Age and even some ancient caves.

There are several different festivals that are celebrated by the people in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. One festival that you'll find held in the month of November is the Apoo Festival.

This festival occurs in Techiman and it is a festival that is for people to purify themselves from social evil. The event lasts an entire week and is full of different activities. It is a time of unity and reunions of family and tourists are welcome to join in.

Another important festival in the region is the Kwafie Festival, which occurs between the months of November and December. The Nsuatre, Dormaa Ahenkro, and Berekum people celebrate this festival. It is in honor of their ancestors and is also held for purification of the people.
